The Mexican Congress is preparing for an extraordinary session starting Tuesday, May 26, to discuss justice system reforms sent by President Claudia Sheinbaum.
Senate President Laura Itzel Castillo Juárez announced that the General Congress Session will install the First Extraordinary Period on Tuesday, May 26. The Chamber of Deputies will act as the chamber of origin and the Senate as the reviewing chamber.
The main package includes a constitutional reform to postpone the second federal and local judicial election from 2027 to 2028. A reform to the General Law of Electoral Institutions and Procedures will also be analyzed to create an organ within the INE that reviews the integrity of candidates nominated by parties.
In addition, both chambers will discuss initiatives to establish proven foreign interference as grounds for electoral nullity. The extraordinary period coincides with the Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly to be held in the Senate from May 26 to 28.
