Fan-made portal remake completed but stalled by valve

Developers of a long-running fan project to remake the original Portal have finished the game. Titled Alive & Kicking, the title uses assets and code from Portal 2 but remains unreleased on Steam. Valve has not responded to recent licensing requests.

Developers at Rhubarb & Rhubarb began work on Alive & Kicking in 2011. The project rebuilds the 2007 classic using the Portal 2 engine and includes visual updates along with possible new puzzle chambers.

Team member Dot Operator stated on the Steam discussions page that the game is finished. However, the group lacks permission to release it because Valve stopped replying after the developers submitted a non-commercial license form several months ago.

Valve had previously supported the effort by granting access to Portal 2 source code under a nondisclosure agreement. Multiple other fan projects based on Valve properties have reached Steam, yet this one now sits in limbo pending further contact from the company.

Fans hope increased attention will prompt Valve to respond and clear the way for release.
