The Public Health Agency of Sweden has been tasked with examining risks of generative AI for children's mental health. Recommendations are due on June 1, 2027.
Social Minister Jakob Forssmed (KD) stressed the need to act in time. "We cannot make the same mistake we did with social media", he said.
Over half of children aged 8 to 19 use AI tools according to the Internet Foundation. Usage is highest in middle and high school.
Forssmed noted that many children of middle school age see AI as a friend. "For many children AI appears as the one that always answers never is busy", he said.
The assignment aims to prevent AI from replacing emotional bonds with humans.
