Eastleigh residents protest and issue 24-hour ultimatum after fifth abduction

Residents and traders in Eastleigh protested on April 2, demanding the release of abducted businessman Shukri Hassan within 24 hours. The 33-year-old was seized by armed men on March 28. This is the fifth such case in the area over the past month.

Residents and traders in Nairobi's Eastleigh neighborhood protested on Thursday, April 2, after the alleged abduction of 33-year-old businessman Shukri Hassan. Demonstrators issued a 24-hour ultimatum to authorities, demanding his immediate release and measures against rising disappearances in the area.

Hassan was taken on the evening of Saturday, March 28, in Fedha Estate within the Pipeline area. Family members reported that armed men in plain clothes handcuffed him and bundled him into a black Prado vehicle, footage captured by CCTV cameras.

A family member said in distress, “We do not know where he is. We are distressed looking for him. Who took the father of my children? We want justice.” Relatives visited police stations and mortuaries across Nairobi without leads, with his phone's last signal traced to Runda.

Protesters insisted that if Hassan faces charges, he must appear in court. One resident stated, “If there is a case against him, let him be taken to court to answer to the law. We just want to know where he is.”

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen stated that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations has formed a special team to investigate the cases. “DCI is carrying out robust investigations into all complaints and alleged abductions in Eastleigh,” he said. Murkomen added that some involve non-Kenyans who were deported.
