Ethiopian customs commission fully digitalizes services

The Ethiopian Customs Commission has completed the full digitalization of its services to offer faster and more modern support to importers and exporters. This initiative aligns with the Digital Ethiopia 2025 strategy and supports the country's economic reforms. Deputy Commissioner Azezew Chane highlighted the role of the new Electronic Single Window system in streamlining processes.

The Ethiopian Customs Commission (ECC) announced the full digitalization of its operations, aimed at providing efficient services to customers, especially those involved in import and export activities. In an interview with the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA), Deputy Commissioner Azezew Chane explained that the commission has implemented various digital measures since the launch of the Digital Ethiopia 2025 strategy. He noted that the digital economy forms one of the key pillars in the Homegrown Economic Reform agenda.

Under this framework, the ECC has introduced a comprehensive digital system that allows importers and exporters to handle their tasks online. A central component is the Electronic Single Window (ESW) system, which connects over 70 institutions. This platform enables traders to submit all necessary import and export documents in a single batch, significantly cutting down on processing costs, delays, and redundant paperwork, according to Chane.

This development is expected to enhance trade efficiency in Ethiopia by reducing bureaucratic hurdles and promoting a more integrated approach to customs procedures. The initiative reflects broader efforts to modernize the economy through technology.
