Family seeks justice after patient's death from botched tooth extraction

A family in Kawangware is demanding justice after Amos Isoka died from complications following a faulty tooth extraction at a local clinic. The procedure led to severe infections and respiratory failure, with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council confirming the facility operated unlawfully. The family expresses frustration over the poor handling and seeks government aid.

Amos Isoka, a resident of Kawangware, lost his life due to complications from a botched tooth extraction performed by a local physician at an unlicensed clinic. According to reports, Isoka visited the clinic to have a tooth removed, but his condition deteriorated rapidly. He returned seeking further help and a referral letter, only to be dismissed by the practitioner who refused to provide the note and suggested he get a scan at Mbagathi Hospital, claiming it was not his concern.

The family rushed Isoka to Wema Hospital, where doctors suspected the issues stemmed from unsterilized dental tools. He received strong antibiotics but showed no improvement. He was then transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), where he was admitted for a week. His health worsened further, leading to severe chest infections and breathing difficulties.

Isoka's wife recounted that doctors informed her he needed chest surgery due to pressure complications overnight. "I was told that Amos needed chest surgery because he had developed pressure issues the previous night. He stopped breathing and was taken for CPR, but he passed away at around 11 p.m.," she said. She expressed outrage at being asked to settle bills immediately after his death and appealed for government assistance to transport his body back to Kitale.

His brother voiced the family's dissatisfaction with the handling of the case, emphasizing their pursuit of justice over compensation. "We are not happy because the doctor involved treated us poorly. All we are seeking is justice. We do not have the money. Amos and I were the ones supporting our mother," he said.

The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) has verified that the facility was operating illegally, and the family continues to demand accountability.
