Jirongo family demands probe into road accident death

Family and friends of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo are demanding a thorough investigation into the December 13 car crash that killed him near Naivasha, questioning his presence there and calling for surveillance footage review amid suspicions of foul play.

Following the head-on collision on December 13, 2025, near Karai petrol station on the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway—which claimed the life of Cyrus Jirongo, 64, as detailed in earlier reports—his family has raised serious concerns. They question how Jirongo, driving alone back to Nairobi from an unexpected location in Naivasha, ended up there when he was expected in Nairobi.

Gathered at his Gigiri home on December 14, relatives and allies voiced suspicions. Ally George Khaniri said: “He left his Karen home on Friday, and hours later was reported dead. How did he end up in Naivasha driving back to Nairobi? That's a mystery that must be unravelled.” A family friend added: “He was allegedly in Karen at 11:45 PM and was later found in Naivasha when he was not supposed to be there, which poses questions. The family is very suspicious.” Former Westlands MP Fred Gumo called for surveillance footage: “We are asking investigation officers to tell us what really happened. There are cameras these days. They must have detected this car when it left Karen going to Naivasha, and when it turned to come this way.”

Police investigations continue, with reports of a suspected firearm in Jirongo's vehicle that has not been found. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday or Tuesday, with burial planned for December 30 at his Lumakanda home. Jirongo was known for leading the Youth for Kanu ’92 campaign, serving as Minister for Rural Development, and his 2017 presidential bid.
