Mbadi moves to strengthen influence in Nyanza after Raila death

Finance Minister John Mbadi appears to be building his political strength in Nyanza following Raila Odinga’s death. His recent remarks have placed him at odds with some ODM leaders.

Mbadi told an ODM meeting in Mombasa on May 4 that he will not contest any political seat in the 2027 general election. He defended his comments by noting that everyone is free to interpret them as they wish.

Last Friday he was installed as guardian of the Luo Council of Elders Nairobi branch. The move is seen as part of his strategy to consolidate political influence across Nyanza.

In recent months he has attended funerals and political events across the region by helicopter while seeking to build support for President Ruto ahead of the 2027 vote.
