Mental health issues in studies: finding help

Many students experience stress and exhaustion during their studies. The 2023 health report by Techniker Krankenkasse indicates that nearly 70 percent have faced stress-related burnout. Universities and student services provide low-threshold counseling options.

University life often involves significant pressures that exceed everyday stress. According to the 2023 Techniker Krankenkasse health report, 63 percent of surveyed students have experienced anxieties and worries. Common symptoms include concentration difficulties and sleep issues. Primary causes are exams (51 percent), combining studies with part-time jobs (33 percent), fear of poor grades (28 percent), overly difficult or extensive material (28 percent), and financial concerns (23 percent).

Psychotherapist Maria Sehm, who heads the psychosocial counseling center at Studentenwerk Leipzig, highlights warning signs such as sudden changes in routine: trouble getting up, attending lectures, or meeting friends, persistent sadness, or sleep disturbances. Often, outsiders like roommates or friends notice these shifts first and suggest seeking help.

Enrolled students are entitled to free counseling at universities, including open office hours, group sessions, and up to 12 therapy hours with trained psychotherapists. Due to high demand, waiting lists may exist, but the emphasis is on quick access without bureaucracy. For extended therapy, health insurance covers costs; searches can be done via the Kassenärztliche Vereinigung website or the 116117 patient service.

Additional resources include counseling from student representatives (AStA), churches, or student-run initiatives like Nightline. Those under 25 can access crisis support via WhatsApp through Krisenchat. Psychotherapist Wilfried Schumann, who has led the University of Oldenburg's counseling service for 20 years, advises that no issue is too minor. "If the car makes strange noises, you go to the workshop," he says. Early intervention can prevent larger problems.
