Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang'ata has joined Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party. The move comes two months after he said he would quit the United Democratic Alliance.
In May, Kang'ata announced he would not defend his gubernatorial seat on a UDA ticket in the 2027 elections due to strategic disagreements with the party. He officially joined DCP on Friday after months of talks with Gachagua.
“Welcome home, Governor Irungu Kang'ata, where you belong,” Gachagua said in a statement. Gachagua also said he received Kang'ata at Wamunyoro Residence and noted that DCP now has a governor, one MP and three MCAs.
Kang'ata had earlier aligned with the Linda Mwananchi faction. DCP won the Ol Kalou by-election on July 16.
