Study shows Gen Z ready to influence 2027 elections

A new study reveals that Gen Z youth in Kenya are prepared to participate in the 2027 general elections, with nearly seven out of ten intending to vote. However, low voter registration and distrust in the electoral system pose major barriers. The report warns that these shifts could lead to the highest youth turnout since 2013 if addressed.

A study conducted by Odipo Dev explored youth sentiments following the 2024 protests against the Finance Bill. It found that many young people have a strong intent to engage politically, but distrust in the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) prevents them from registering. “There is significant distrust in the IEBC... This has stopped many from registering,” says Winny Jerotich, a researcher at Odipo Dev.

The report explains that reasons for low participation have shifted from apathy to frustration with empty promises and opaque institutions. Post-protests, Gen Z has shown increased civic responsibility, but registration remains a major hurdle. “After the 2024 protests, Gen Z has demonstrated... The broader question is how to guide these youth on this journey,” the report states.

The study involved 531 participants aged 18-29 from 20 counties preparing for the November 27 by-elections. IEBC data indicates that 31% of eligible youth have not registered. Marjan Hussein Marjan, IEBC's Chief Executive Officer, has urged parents and institutions to encourage young people, stressing that political stability is essential for Vision 2030 progress.

The opposition criticizes the IEBC for inadequate civic education and introducing iris-scanning technology without sufficient explanation. However, Marjan says the technology enhances transparency and prevents fraud. “Credible elections start with clean and accurate data... Technology helps prevent double registration and improves transparency,” he explains. The study also reveals that 37% of 18-19-year-olds used AI tools to research candidates, and conversations with trusted friends shape their political views.
