U.S. citizen extradited from Kenya after three years to face murder charges

A U.S. citizen who had been hiding in Kenya for over three years has been extradited to face charges related to a 2022 overdose death in the United States. He was arrested on October 31, 2025, in Kajiado County and now faces federal charges for fentanyl distribution.

The individual, whose name has not been disclosed in reports, was arrested by Kenyan police forces in Mire, Kajiado, on October 31, 2025, after evading capture since 2022. According to U.S. media reports, he was charged in connection with the overdose death of a 19-year-old woman outside New London, Minnesota, where an autopsy confirmed death from fentanyl effects.

He was first arrested in 2022 and faced charges of second-degree manslaughter, third-degree murder, second-degree drug possession, and two counts of first-degree drug sale. After posting a $300,000 (about Ksh 38.7 million) bail, he fled the country without court permission from Minnesota.

His extradition was supported by the Kandiyohi County Attorney’s Office, the United States Attorney’s Office, the FBI, and the U.S. Marshals Service, alongside Kenya's National Police Service. He arrived in the U.S. and was arraigned in federal court on January 6, 2026, for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. He now faces charges in Minnesota for conspiracy to distribute fentanyl resulting in death, distribution of fentanyl resulting in death, and possession with intent to distribute fentanyl.

This case follows by three months the extradition of another national from Côte d'Ivoire from Kenya on firearms smuggling charges. However, the primary focus remains on the American man and Kenya's role in handling international extradition requests.
