Widow of police officer killed in Turkana pleads for government support

The family of a police officer gunned down while guarding KCSE exams in Turkana has appealed to the government for assistance. The widow, left with a young child and the officer's elderly mother, highlighted the loss of their breadwinner and unfulfilled plans for a family business. They also demand swift investigations into the bandit attack.

On Monday, November 3, 2025, a police officer was fatally shot by suspected bandits while guarding a container of Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination materials at the Deputy County Commissioner's offices in Turkana. The attackers ambushed him and a colleague, killing the officer on the spot and stealing his AK-47 rifle loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition. Police rushed to the scene, but he was declared dead there, with his body taken to a nearby mortuary for post-mortem.

The incident occurred amid a surge in insecurity in the region, where bandits often target weapons. Preliminary reports indicate the attackers were specifically after the officer's gun.

Speaking on Tuesday, November 4, the officer's widow led the family in breaking their silence, pleading for government support. She described her husband as young and the family's breadwinner, noting they shared a baby and had plans to start a business in 2026. "The deceased is my husband, and he was very young. We have a little baby, so I am asking that the government help me because the last time he came home in August, he promised many things, including setting up a business for me next year," she said.

"Now that he is dead, that idea of a business is also gone. I am just praying that the government help me in any form, whether by giving me a job or even starting up any business for me that will sustain me, because he was the breadwinner of the family," she added. The widow also revealed she now cares for the officer's elderly mother.

The deceased's sister-in-law sought financial aid for her children, explaining that the officer had taken them in and covered their expenses. The family urged speedy investigations to bring the perpetrators to justice.
