Blizzard agrees to redesign Overwatch hero Anran's face

Blizzard Entertainment has announced plans to visually redesign the new Overwatch hero Anran following community backlash and criticism from her voice actor over her in-game appearance. The controversy centers on discrepancies between Anran's current cutesy design and her fiercer depiction in prior media. This comes as Overwatch launches its major Season 1 update with five new heroes on February 10, 2026.

Blizzard has responded to criticism regarding the design of Anran, a new Damage hero introduced in the upcoming Overwatch update. Anran, the sister of existing hero Wuyang, appeared in Wuyang's animated short "Elemental Kin" and comic "Against the Tide," where she was portrayed with a more believable and ferocious face. In contrast, her in-game model features a younger, cutesier look, which has drawn accusations of "same face syndrome" among female characters in Overwatch.

The controversy intensified after Anran's reveal last week, with early access available over the weekend. Overwatch game director Aaron Keller addressed the issue in a video message on February 10, 2026, stating, "The team is currently discussing what it will take to make Anran look and feel more like the fierce older sister we all envision her to be. We're so proud of the work that our team has put into Anran and the rest of the five heroes launching in Season 1, and we agree that she can be even better if we get this aspect of her right in-game."

Keller added, "We discussed sharing this with all of you last week but wanted to wait until we had confirmation of exactly what we can do. We're hoping to make this update in Season 1 but I don't have specifics to share just yet. Our hero models are incredibly complicated and we really need to test out what we can do."

Anran's voice actor, Fareeha Andersen, also voiced concerns in a social media video, highlighting broader issues with female representation. She said, "There was an unspoken promise [made in the animated short and comic] that said, 'We're going to challenge the beauty standards ransacking media these days - the Ozempic chic, the contour your nose / you have no nose / the tiniest nose. And because of that precedent, I think people feel let down."

Andersen continued, "Overwatch is a trailblazer at challenging that, at trying to break those moulds, at trying to explore the bounds of what it means to be good, what it looks like to be heroic. And I think the result we got says something else - it says something that leaves a bad taste in our mouths. It's not the bold, optimistic swing that we know Overwatch to make. And it's a look that isn't congruent with her personality; she looks like the younger sibling, she looks more docile somehow, as the fire hero."

Overwatch has previously been praised for diverse character representations, such as the older Egyptian hero Ana, and for casting actors with matching backgrounds, including Andersen for Anran. The redesign discussions occur amid Overwatch's relaunch as the game drops the "2" from its title and introduces The Reign of Talon, an expansion-like release adding Anran alongside Domina (Tank), Emre (Damage), Mizuki (Support), and Jetpack Cat (Support). The update launches at 7pm GMT on February 10, 2026, with plans for 10 new heroes throughout the year and a new annual expansion model focused on storylines.

Discussions on X highlight strong community support for redesigning Anran's face to align with her fiercer original depiction and avoid resemblance to Kiriko or Juno. The English voice actor's criticism of the 'Ozempic-chic' design amplified backlash. Some users defend the current cute model and decry politicization. Others express skepticism about prioritizing cosmetics over gameplay improvements. Blizzard's response is generally welcomed as responsive.
