Carboneras annuls Algarrobico license after court order

The Carboneras town council has approved the annulment of the building license for the Algarrobico hotel. The decision complies with an order from the Tribunal Superior de Justicia de Andalucía issued on June 24.

The extraordinary plenary session on July 7 approved the annulment of the 2003 building license by seven votes in favor. The hotel stands inside the Parque Natural de Cabo de Gata. Four councilors were absent during the vote.

Mayor Salvador Hernández requested support from the Junta de Andalucía and the central government to move toward demolition. The company Azata del Sol has two months to appeal before the contentious-administrative court.

Acting regional development counselor Rocío Díaz announced that the Junta will immediately start technical work for environmental restoration. Greenpeace will ask the court to order the immediate demolition of the building.
