Deputy Governor Rano ready to office in Kota Tua for revitalization monitoring

Jakarta Deputy Governor Rano Karno plans to office in the Kota Tua area to directly monitor its revitalization project, preserving its low emission zone status. He proposed building a tram there as eco-friendly public transport. Rano shared these plans at City Hall on April 9, 2026.

The Jakarta Provincial Government plans to revitalize the Kota Tua area in West Jakarta to restore the city's historical and cultural identity. Deputy Governor Rano Karno, head of the Kota Tua Revitalization and Arrangement Team, emphasized the provincial government's seriousness about the project. "We have formed working groups so inter-agency coordination can be quick," he said.

Rano is ready to move his office to Kota Tua in about a month to ensure the revitalization proceeds as planned. The area will remain a low emission zone (LEZ), restricted to pedestrians, cyclists, public transport, and vehicles with special low-emission stickers. Kota Tua has been a LEZ pilot since February 8, 2021, followed by Tebet Eco Park since 2023.

Rano proposed low-emission public transport in the form of a tram within the area. "There is one format, perhaps our plan to build, maybe the term is a tram in Kota Tua," he said at City Hall on Thursday (9/4/2026). He noted that trams can reduce emissions and must be designed jointly with the MRT line. Rano recalled riding a tram from Harmoni to Pasar Baru at age 8, remembering Jakarta's past tram system.

The LEZ aims to improve Jakarta's air quality by cutting motor vehicle pollution and encouraging public transport use.
