A petitioner has moved to Kenya's High Court to challenge the latest fuel price increases announced by EPRA. He argues there was insufficient public participation and seeks full disclosure of the pricing formula.
The petitioner seeks court orders to suspend the new pump prices and compel EPRA and the National Treasury to disclose the full pricing breakdown used in the May to June cycle. This includes landed costs, taxes, exchange rate assumptions and how Ksh5 billion in the Petroleum Development Levy Fund has been spent.
The petition also questions the waiver of sulfur fuel standards and names several cabinet secretaries and agencies as respondents. The prices took effect on May 15 for 30 days.
The Motorists Association of Kenya has separately announced a nationwide strike from Monday May 18 in protest. Deputy President Kithure Kindiki attributed the adjustments to conflicts involving Iran, Israel and the US.
