Team Cherry has announced that Hollow Knight: Silksong has sold more than 7 million copies since its September release, excluding Game Pass players. The studio also unveiled its first major expansion, Sea of Sorrow, set to launch as a free update in 2026. This nautical-themed content will add new areas, bosses, and tools to the challenging platformer.
Sales Milestone
Hollow Knight: Silksong, the highly anticipated sequel to Hollow Knight, achieved a remarkable sales figure shortly after launch. Team Cherry revealed that the game has sold over 7 million copies in just three months since its September 2025 release across multiple platforms. This number represents direct sales only and does not account for the "millions more" players who accessed it through Microsoft's Xbox Game Pass subscription service.
"It's a truly staggering number of players, more than we could have ever expected," Team Cherry stated. "Watching the community grow, seeing the amazing art, the mods, the unexpected strategies, and the support between players through the game's challenges has been hugely rewarding for us here at home. Your continued enthusiasm remains a massive motivator as we work towards expanding the game even further."
The game's release caused crashes on several digital storefronts due to overwhelming demand from fans who had waited since its 2019 announcement. Eurogamer awarded Silksong five stars, praising it as "pretty and charmingly mean-spirited, this is a game filled with revelations and genuine personality."
Sea of Sorrow Expansion
Building on this success, Team Cherry detailed the first major post-launch content for Silksong: the Sea of Sorrow expansion. Scheduled for 2026, this free update will transport players "across and beneath the salt-stricken seas" in a nautical-themed adventure. It promises new areas to explore, additional bosses to battle, fresh tools, and more, enhancing the core gameplay experience for all owners.
More specifics on Sea of Sorrow are expected shortly before its release. Team Cherry had previously hinted at post-launch plans following the game's debut and reiterated them in November 2025. The studio has also expressed interest in potential future entries in the Hollow Knight series, designed to stand alone without requiring prior lore knowledge.
This announcement caps a busy year for Team Cherry, with Silksong's strong performance underscoring the enduring appeal of its challenging platformer formula.
