Ignasi Camós Victoria, director general of the Instituto de la Cinematografía y de las Artes Audiovisuales (ICAA), has died at 56 on Thursday from cancer, the Ministry of Culture announced. He had held the position since June 2023 and was on sick leave in recent weeks. The ministry praised his commitment and work at the ICAA.
The Ministry of Culture announced the death of Ignasi Camós Victoria, director general of the Instituto de la Cinematografía y de las Artes Audiovisuales (ICAA), which occurred on Thursday at age 56. Camós, battling cancer and on sick leave in recent weeks, took the position in June 2023 after Beatriz Navas's resignation, under Miquel Iceta, and continued under Ernest Urtasun.
Prior to leading the ICAA, Camós was part of the Minister of Culture's Cabinet since 2021 as parliamentary advisor, coordinating working groups for the Estatuto del Artista. Previously, he served as parliamentary advisor in the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (2020-2021) and the Ministry of Labor, Social Security and Migration (2018-2019). He also held positions in the Ministry of Education, the Permanent Representation to the European Union in Brussels, and the Generalitat de Catalunya, and was a tenured professor of Labor Law and Social Security at the University of Girona.
During his time at the ICAA, Camós worked on the Ley del Cine, presented twice to the Council of Ministers without approval, and oversaw public policies including aid to Spanish cinema, coinciding with three Spanish films in Cannes's Official Section.
In a statement, the Ministry of Culture thanked “the great work and commitment of Ignasi Camós at the head of the Instituto de la Cinematografía y de las Artes Audiovisuales, which, together with his vocation for public service, will leave a great mark on the people and institutions he worked with.”
