KURA attributes Kenyatta Avenue viaduct delay to complex engineering

The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has explained the delay in the Kenyatta Avenue-Upper Hill viaduct project, attributing it to the complexity of the structural works required.

KURA said that installation of columns and steel components requires precision engineering and phased execution. The project began in September 2020 but faced years of delays due to payment disputes with contractors before resuming in July 2025. According to President William Ruto, the multi-billion project will be completed in December 2026 and motorists will start using it before the end of the year.

Once operational, the viaduct will ease traffic congestion in one of Nairobi's busiest commercial corridors and improve access to the CBD. KURA noted that the project is at 48 per cent completion and that works are ongoing in phases to minimise disruption to road users.

The viaduct forms part of broader infrastructure works that include the Valley Road–Kenyatta Avenue/Ngong/Nyerere Interchange and the Upper Hill–Haile Selassie Overpass projects. If initial plans are implemented, it will be a dual carriageway approximately one kilometre long and will include cycle lanes and pedestrian walkways.
