Sony says it will not sell hardware at significant losses

Sony has stated it will no longer sell PlayStation consoles at a significant loss. The announcement came during a recent executive Q&A session focused on the company's Game & Network Services division.

Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Hideaki Nishino addressed hardware pricing during the session. He said the company does not intend to absorb all rising component costs and has already raised prices outside Japan.

"As a principle, we do not intend to sell hardware at significant losses," Nishino stated. He added that the firm is monitoring the market while ensuring customers understand the value provided.

Sony has increased PlayStation 5 prices multiple times since the console launched in November 2020, with the latest adjustment in March. Nishino noted these changes have not reduced customer demand.

The comments suggest a higher price point for the next-generation PlayStation. An insider recently estimated component costs for a single PS6 unit at around $960.
