Avril Lavigne has released a cover of Alanis Morissette's 'Ironic' for the soundtrack of the upcoming rom-com Mile End Kicks. The track mirrors the original's style with Lavigne's grungy vocals. The film hits theaters in the United States and Canada today.
Avril Lavigne's version of 'Ironic' accompanies the new romantic comedy Mile End Kicks, which follows Grace Pine, a music critic played by Barbie Ferreira. Set in Montréal in 2011, Pine moves to Canada aiming to write a book about Morissette's Jagged Little Pill before becoming publicist for an indie band after falling for two of its members. The film also features Devon Bostick, known for Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and Stanley Simons from The Iron Claw. It arrives in theaters on April 17. This marks a return collaboration of sorts for Lavigne and Morissette, who duetted 'Ironic' and Lavigne's 'Losing Grip' at the House of Blues in Los Angeles in 2005. 'Ironic,' from Morissette's 1995 album Jagged Little Pill, peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. Morissette once revealed on a 2020 podcast that she initially resisted including the song on the album. Jagged Little Pill later inspired a 2018 Broadway musical that won two Tony Awards, including Best Book of a Musical, and a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album. Lavigne's Love Sux and Morissette's The Storm Before the Calm both came out in 2022.
