Warren, from Massachusetts, claimed Bessent has already spent 20 billion dollars to bail out Argentina and wants Wall Street to add another 20 billion, possibly taxpayer-guaranteed. 'The big banks must reject this deal. Taxpayers shouldn't pay for Trump's political favors,' the lawmaker wrote in a letter to the Managed Funds Association, requesting information on hedge funds' role in the Treasury-Argentina negotiations.
Warren led the introduction of the 'No Argentina Bailout Act,' a bill to block the Trump administration's ability to provide aid using the Exchange Stabilization Fund. In response, Bessent posted on X: 'While she remains mostly focused on singing "Don't Cry for Me Massachusetts" and voting against paying government workers, @SenWarren has somehow also found the recent bandwidth to threaten large banks on their lending policies.' He referenced the song 'Don’t Cry for Me Argentina' from the Evita musical and attached an image of Warren depicted as Eva Perón.
Bessent defended the aid as support for 'a key ally that has implemented fiscally responsible policies.' In a letter, he stated the Treasury was 'forced to prioritize critical efforts necessary for the president's constitutional functions, including national security and global financial stability.' He urged Warren: 'Get off the balcony, stop raging against one of our great Latin American allies, and vote to reopen the government,' alluding to Republican-Democratic budget disputes.
