The Washington Capitals have traded forward Nic Dowd to the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for goaltender Jesper Vikman and two draft picks. The deal, announced on March 5, 2026, sends the 35-year-old veteran to the Pacific Division leaders while bolstering Washington's prospect pool. Capitals coach Spencer Carbery described the move as a difficult decision after Dowd's seven years with the team.
The Washington Capitals acquired goaltender Jesper Vikman, a second-round pick in the 2029 NHL Draft, and a third-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft (originally from San Jose) from the Vegas Golden Knights for forward Nic Dowd. The trade was announced on March 5, 2026, by Vegas general manager Kelly McCrimmon and Washington's senior vice president and general manager Chris Patrick.
Dowd, 35, from Huntsville, Alabama, has recorded 16 points (four goals, 12 assists) in 55 games this season with the Capitals, where he led forwards in shorthanded ice time at 2:40 per game and ranked 10th among NHL forwards in that category. He also produced 113 hits, third-highest on the team. Over eight seasons in Washington, Dowd posted at least 20 points in six campaigns, including career highs of 14 goals and 27 points in 82 games last season. Selected by the Los Angeles Kings in the seventh round (198th overall) of the 2009 NHL Draft, Dowd has 192 points (88 goals, 104 assists) in 637 regular-season games across the Kings, Vancouver Canucks, and Capitals.
Capitals coach Spencer Carbery reflected on the trade's impact: "Really difficult day for the organization, our team, players, staff. Nic Dowd being traded after seven years … difficult decision as an organization and one that I am sure was not taken lightly whatsoever. He's meant a lot to this team. He's meant a lot to this community, him and his family." Teammate Charlie Lindgren added, "It's terrible. It [stinks] not only as a really good friend, we've gotten really close to his family... When you lose a brother, when you lose someone that has represented the Capitals organization to the fullest the last seven, eight years he's been here, he is Capitals hockey."
Vikman, 23, from Danderyd, Sweden, stands 6-foot-4 and weighs 205 pounds. Selected by Vegas in the fifth round (125th overall) of the 2020 NHL Draft, he has an 8-7-3 record, 3.41 goals-against average, and .866 save percentage in 18 games this season with the AHL's Henderson Silver Knights. In 41 career AHL games, Vikman is 16-18-5 with a 3.48 GAA, .880 save percentage, and one shutout. Prior to the pros, he played two seasons in the Western Hockey League with the Vancouver Giants, earning BC Division First Team All-Star Goaltender honors in 2022-23.
At the time of the trade, Vegas held first place in the Pacific Division with a 29-19-4 record, one point ahead of the Anaheim Ducks. The Capitals were 31-25-7, four points behind the Boston Bruins for the Eastern Conference's second wild card spot.
