St. Louis Cardinals leadoff hitter JJ Wetherholt has posted strong numbers through 83 games of his rookie season. The second baseman leads all defenders with 18 outs above average and ranks sixth in MLB with 3.8 fWAR. He was not selected for the upcoming All-Star Game.
Wetherholt has produced a .269/.364/.416 slash line with 13 home runs, 36 RBIs and 54 runs scored. He has also stolen nine bases and posted a +3 baserunning run value.
Defensively, he leads the majors in assists and ranks in the top 10 in double plays started while committing just two errors. His 14 defensive runs saved place fifth in MLB.
Wetherholt recorded a home run on the first pitch of a nationally televised game at Wrigley Field against the Chicago Cubs shortly after All-Star rosters were announced. Teammate Jordan Walker and manager Oliver Marmol were selected for the July 14 game in Philadelphia.
