China and United States maintain steady anti-drug cooperation

A senior Chinese narcotics control official said on Wednesday that China and the United States have maintained steady progress in anti-drug cooperation, as the nation adds 16 substances to its controlled list.

Wei Xiaojun, executive deputy director of the Office of China National Narcotics Control Commission, said China and the United States have deepened cooperation in substance scheduling, chemical control, intelligence sharing and joint investigations.

Chinese agencies have worked on joint cases and fugitive repatriation with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Immigration and Customs Enforcement. In February, police in Tianjin arrested a suspect surnamed Gong based on U.S. information, while U.S. authorities arrested a suspect in Georgia.

Wei stressed that cooperation should rest on mutual respect and trust. "As long as China and the U.S. work together, they can effectively address drug-related challenges," he said. Starting July 1, China will add 16 substances to its controlled catalogue.

The 2025 China Drug Situation Report, released Wednesday, showed authorities solved 27,000 drug cases and arrested 41,000 suspects last year, down 27.6 percent and 33 percent year-on-year.
