Construction begins on E22 bypass around Söderköping

Preparatory work for the E22 bypass around Söderköping has begun after decades of planning. The road is expected to be completed in 2030 if the schedule holds.

The Swedish Transport Administration has started soil investigations and forest clearing along the planned route. The E22 through Söderköping has long been one of the country’s most notorious traffic bottlenecks due to queues from traffic lights and bridge openings over the Göta Canal.

Project manager Andreas Eklund says construction traffic will increase. He adds that the agency aims for the road to be ready in summer 2030, though a case concerning the aqueduct at the Göta Canal is with the Land and Environment Court of Appeal.

Earlier proposals included bridges, tunnels and a boat lift over the canal. The final solution is an aqueduct. Actual road construction is scheduled to begin in the autumn.

Traffic on E22 was closed late Friday evening between Kronetorp and Lund Norra to lift the first of two new green pedestrian and cycle bridges into place over the motorway in Lund. Work was delayed by darkness and cold but the bridge was in position by 22:00. Lund residents must wait until the end of June to use it.
