Court grants bail to 12 protesters including two children over fuel price demo

Twelve protesters, including two children, appeared in a Nairobi court on Wednesday over a demonstration demanding lower fuel prices. Chief Magistrate Roda Yator granted each a cash bail of Sh3,000. The case will be mentioned on May 7.

Twelve demonstrators, including two children, were arraigned at the Nairobi Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, charged with participating in the #RejectFuelPrices protests on Tuesday. The protests demanded that the government reduce fuel prices.

Ten adult defendants pleaded not guilty to charges filed by the Director of Public Prosecutions. Their lawyer, Ian Mutiso, requested bail, stating the offense was minor with no severe penalty. “The defendants face charges for exercising their constitutional rights. At the appropriate time, I will challenge the validity of these charges,” Mutiso said.

Mutiso also requested that the two children be taken to a health facility for age verification. The prosecution did not oppose the bail application. The accused face charges of wilfully obstructing the free use of public roads, contrary to Section 11(1)(a) read with Section 11(2) of the Nairobi County Public Nuisance Act 2021.

Chief Magistrate Roda Yator granted them cash bail of Sh3,000 each. She ordered the Officer Commanding Central Police Station to escort the children to a health facility for age assessment. The case will be mentioned on May 7, 2026, and a hearing date set.
