The Equality Court has found radio personality Ngizwe Mchunu liable for hate speech, harassment and unfair discrimination following online videos posted in 2025.
The judgment stems from videos in which Mchunu made derogatory remarks about members of the LGBTQIA+ community after a same-sex wedding that involved traditional Zulu attire. The statements compared gay people to animals, accused them of grooming children and suggested they deserved imprisonment or death. Mchunu also organised a demonstration targeting LGBTQIA+ persons.
Wright J ruled that the conduct amounted to hate speech, harassment and unfair discrimination under the Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act. The judge stated that Mchunu had acted against the Constitution and insulted persons who enjoy constitutional rights.
The court ordered Mchunu to make a financial contribution to organisations promoting education and the prevention of hate crimes. He must also complete human rights sensitisation training, issue a public apology, refrain from discriminatory demonstrations and pay the applicants' legal costs.
