Ethiopia's cyber agency detects over 27,000 attacks in six months

Ethiopia's Information Network Security Administration detected 99.03% of 27,773 cyber attacks over six months. This forms part of the half-year performance review for the 2018 budget year in the Ethiopian calendar. The agency is advancing initiatives under the Digital Ethiopia 2030 strategy.

In Addis Ababa, the Information Network Security Administration (AIDA) reported in its half-year performance review for the 2018 Ethiopian fiscal year, dated January 1, 2018 (FEC), that it successfully detected 27,505 out of 27,773 monitored cyber attacks over six months. This achievement represents 99.03% detection rate.

AIDA's Director General, Te'gist Hamid, noted that as cyber threats evolve over time, the agency's defensive capabilities are strengthening by incorporating emerging attack patterns. The organization is prioritizing the development of technological infrastructures to identify and respond to cyber security risks early.

Underpinning the Digital Ethiopia 2030 strategy, AIDA is encouraging government institutions to deliver efficient services by adopting reliable technologies. Examples include the Revenue Ministry's e-invoicing system, the Addis Ababa Revenue Body's body-worn cameras, and the Federal Police's integrated human and asset management systems.

In digital forensic examinations, the agency responded to 245 out of 253 submitted requests. These efforts highlight AIDA's ongoing work to uncover cyber attacks in Ethiopia.
