Hamilton takes surprise Silverstone sprint pole for Ferrari

Lewis Hamilton secured sprint pole at the British Grand Prix after Ferrari exceeded expectations at Silverstone. The seven-time world champion edged Kimi Antonelli by 0.011 seconds.

Hamilton said Ferrari engineers had warned him the team would be six tenths off in a straight line. He described the predictions as having "scared" him before the session.

In reality the Ferrari proved far more competitive. Hamilton topped first practice and then claimed his first sprint pole since China last year.

Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc called the result surprising. He noted the team had expected a much larger gap to the leading cars.

Hamilton praised the progress at the Maranello factory and the long-run pace but warned that slipstreaming from Mercedes and Red Bull could make the sprint race difficult.
