Harry Hedman, Lightning captain's dog, raised over $100,000 for humane society

Harry Hedman, the beloved French Bulldog of Tampa Bay Lightning captain Victor Hedman, passed away after 14 years of life. The dog became a philanthropist, helping raise more than $100,000 for the Humane Society of Tampa Bay through various initiatives. His efforts supported medical costs for thousands of homeless animals.

Harry Hedman was more than a family pet to Tampa Bay Lightning captain Victor Hedman and his wife, Sanna. The white-and-black coated French Bulldog joined their family during Hedman's third NHL season and quickly became a Tampa celebrity and Stanley Cup champion alongside the team.

Throughout his life, Harry served as the face of fundraising efforts for the Humane Society of Tampa Bay. Initiatives included Harry-themed jerseys, t-shirts, hats, replica stuffed animals, and a wine bottle auction, which collectively raised over $100,000. These funds covered essential medical costs for animals at the shelter, such as sterilization, vaccinations, microchipping (around $350 per animal), medications, surgeries, and further treatments.

The Lightning organization partnered with the Hedmans to promote awareness for homeless pets in the Tampa Bay area. During the COVID pandemic, the family fostered puppies to live with Harry until they found permanent homes. After Harry's passing earlier this month, the Lightning Foundation donated $7,700 to the humane society in his name on Oct. 1.

Victor Hedman reflected on his companion's impact: “After a tough game or a good game, he was always home and waiting for you. And obviously when we had kids, how good he was with the kids. He was a funny dog... It’s tough to put into words exactly what he meant, but he’s deeply missed.”

Ornella Varchi, chief advancement officer for the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, praised Harry's contributions: “Everything that they've done to help not only raise funds through the shirts, the toys and the hats and everything Harry did for us, but also just by raising the awareness... they truly helped to save thousands of lives.” Hedman added, “Harry’s done a good job kind of being the face of the humane society… He’s gonna live on forever on those jerseys and the hats and the plush toys.”

The Hedman family plans a private commemoration for Harry and may visit the humane society in the future when ready for a new pet, though the loss leaves a significant void.
