Lucas Herbert and Sam Burns both posted rounds of 62 on Friday to share the lead at the halfway point of the 2026 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale. Bryson DeChambeau sits one shot behind after rounds of 67 and 66.
Herbert birdied nine times in his second round before closing with a bogey for an eight-under total. He expressed mixed feelings after narrowly missing a chance at the major scoring record.
Burns joined him in the 62 club with a birdie-birdie-birdie finish that included two holeouts from off the green. The American had become a father just days earlier.
DeChambeau remains in contention despite an ongoing rules issue after his strong start. Rookies Jackson Suber and Ryan Gerard are tied for third at six under.
Several big names missed the cut, including Matt Fitzpatrick, Justin Rose, Jordan Spieth, Aaron Rai and Wyndham Clark. Tommy Fleetwood and Jon Rahm are among those still in the hunt inside the top 10.
