Lagos government begins investigation into shopping complex collapse

The Lagos State Building Control Agency has started an investigation into the collapse of a three-storey shopping complex in Alakija, Satellite Town.

The General Manager of the agency, Mrs Florence Gbaye, announced the probe in a statement issued on Friday. A secondary structural analysis will also be carried out to establish the cause of the incident.

Gbaye urged residents to report any buildings showing signs of distress to the agency. She provided a toll-free line, 07000-527222, for such reports and expressed sympathy for those affected by the collapse.

Some occupants said they were unaware the building had been marked for demolition. A government official stated that evacuation efforts continued into early Friday, resulting in nine bodies recovered and 27 people rescued. Emergency responders remain at the site.
