The Corruption Eradication Commission has named Langkat Regent Syah Afandin and his former campaign aide as suspects in an alleged project bribery case in Langkat Regency.
The Corruption Eradication Commission elevated the case to investigation following a sting operation from 1 to 3 July 2026. Syah Afandin is suspected of receiving Rp800 million in project fees and at least Rp3.5 billion in gratifications.
KPK Acting Director of Investigation Achmad Taufik Husein said Syah Afandin requested a 10 percent commitment fee from Education Agency projects and 17 percent from Housing and Settlement Agency projects. Yaqub Abdhal Al Mu'arif obtained 85 projects worth a total Rp10.25 billion in 2025.
KPK detained Syah Afandin at the Red and White Building branch detention center in Jakarta starting 3 July 2026. Yaqub is held at Medan Police detention center for the first 20 days.
Six other individuals including a civil servant and private parties were also arrested during the operation across Langkat, Binjai, and Medan. Investigators seized hundreds of millions of rupiah in cash.
