The governments of Mexico and Canada have signed support for a 16-year extension of the T-MEC ahead of the July 1 trilateral virtual meeting. The United States has yet to define its position, though reports indicate it will not back the immediate extension.
President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that Mexico has already signed in favor of extending the treaty until 2042. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that he does not expect immediate resolutions during the meeting.
If no country backs the extension, the T-MEC will remain in force until 2036 with annual reviews. The virtual meeting includes representatives from the three countries and marks the deadline set in the agreement itself.
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer has scheduled a visit to Mexico for the week of July 20. The Mexican business sector, represented by José Medina Mora of the CCE, expects an extension to be reached after the U.S. midterm elections.
