European Union and Mexico sign trade agreement

The European Union and Mexico have signed a modernized trade agreement to strengthen economic ties and reduce dependence on the United States.

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum sealed the agreement at the summit in Mexico City. It expands the existing 2000 deal to include services, digital trade and agricultural products.

Von der Leyen stated the partnership brings many benefits to both sides and creates more jobs. Mexico expects exports to the EU to rise from 24 to 36 billion US dollars by 2030.

The agreement still requires ratification. In the EU the European Parliament could vote in July. It is the first summit in more than ten years.
