MTR Corporation advances Tung Chung West station project

MTR Corporation announced it will finish boring a 1.3km tunnel for the new Tung Chung West station by September. The company also plans to complete most of the main structure by the first half of next year. The station is located west of Yat Tung Estate in western Tung Chung.

MTR Corporation said on Tuesday that it is on schedule with the Tung Chung West station. The rail operator is using a top-down construction method for the project. This approach builds the ground-level roof slab first to contain noise and dust.

Lee Ka-leung, head of project delivery for Lantau at the corporation, noted that the method allows underground excavation and above-ground work to proceed at the same time. He added that this marks the first time MTR is rotating the boring machine underground instead of extracting and repositioning it on the surface.

The company is also employing various construction techniques to further reduce noise during the works. The new station forms part of the Tung Chung Line Extension.
