In Sörmland police remind residents of the importance of locking doors and securing homes during July and August. The number of reported burglaries has fallen sharply in recent years.
The vacation months of July and August rank among the periods with the most burglaries in Sweden after December. Many houses stand empty when people travel away.
Police in Sörmland see a clear decline in the number of residential burglaries since 2017. Municipal police officer Per Bergström points to improved border protection as a key reason.
– We have seen a clear downward trend from 2017 until today, says Per Bergström.
Last year 293 burglaries were reported in villas, apartments or holiday homes in Sörmland. In 2017 the figure stood at 466 according to the Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention. Bergström still urges everyone to lock the front door even during short trips to the garden.
