Si Caccia, na titular ng Sepino at dating permanent observer ng Holy See sa United Nations sa New York, ay papalit kay Cardinal Christophe Pierre, na 80 taong gulang at nagsilbi bilang ambassador ng Vatican sa US mula 2016.

Si Pope Francis ang nagtalaga kay Caccia bilang apostolic nuncio sa Pilipinas noong Setyembre 2017, sa panahon ng administrasyon ni dating pangulong Rodrigo Duterte, nang labis na mainit ang relasyon sa pagitan ng Catholic Church at ng gobyerno dahil sa giyera laban sa droga.
