The React Foundation has launched under the Linux Foundation, taking over governance of React, React Native, and JSX from Meta. This move aims to provide neutral oversight for the widely used open-source projects. The foundation was announced at the Linux Foundation Member Summit in Napa, California.
React, a JavaScript library for building user interfaces through reusable components, was first open-sourced by Meta in 2013. Its companion project, React Native, extends this component model to mobile development on iOS and Android. These tools have become essential to web and app infrastructure, with contributions from across the industry.
The React Foundation officially launched on February 25, 2026, at the Linux Foundation Member Summit in Napa, California. Meta has transferred React, React Native, and the JSX specification to the foundation, which operates under LF Projects, LLC, a subsidiary of the Linux Foundation. This places React alongside other major projects like Kubernetes and Node.js under neutral governance.
Seth Webster serves as the executive director. Eight companies joined as Platinum founding members: Huawei, Meta, Expo, Software Mansion, Vercel, Callstack, Amazon, and Microsoft. The initiative was first announced in October 2025, reflecting that React has outgrown single-company ownership due to broad industry involvement.
Technical decisions for React will remain independent of the foundation's board, with maintainers retaining control over development. The foundation's priorities include funding maintainers through direct financial support for ecosystem libraries, providing education and resources such as tutorials and documentation, and ensuring global accessibility for developers worldwide.
Additionally, the foundation will manage React's infrastructure, including GitHub repositories, continuous integration systems, trademarks, and the organization of React Conf events.
