Ethereum Foundation cuts 20 percent of workforce

The Ethereum Foundation has eliminated 54 positions, representing about 20 percent of its staff, as part of a restructuring announced Tuesday.

The non-profit organization said the cuts conclude a months-long reorganization aimed at making it leaner and more focused on core priorities. The changes align with an updated mandate and treasury strategy, grouping work into five clusters that include a new institutional layer for enterprise engagement.

Leadership turnover has accompanied the restructuring. Co-executive directors Hsiao-Wei Wang and Tomasz Stańczak have both stepped down recently, with board member Bastian Aue taking on expanded oversight responsibilities. Approximately nine senior figures have left or transitioned over the past six months.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin separately indicated plans for a roughly 40 percent budget reduction. Meanwhile, major Ethereum treasury companies and Lubin have backed a separate initiative called ETHLabs to support development and adoption.

Initial reactions on X mix neutral explanations of the restructuring into five clusters with concerns over funding gaps and leadership exits. Positive takes highlight efficiency gains and a shift to defensive stewardship. Skeptical views note the timing with ETH price weakness and question broader implications.
