SACP leader Mapaila rejects political office ambitions

South African Communist Party general secretary Solly Mapaila stated he has no interest in holding public office during the party's Limpopo Congress.

Solly Mapaila addressed delegates at the SACP Limpopo’s 9th Elective Congress in Nkowankowa, outside Tzaneen. He said the party must focus on working-class emancipation rather than personal advancement.

“I do not have any personal agenda. No one in the movement owes me anything. Now, what will they offer me? I do not need an office. I do not need a political office. I state clearly as the party general secretary, I will not go to government,” Mapaila said.

Mapaila criticised the ANC for responding with threats after the SACP allowed members to assist in election campaigns. SACP spokesperson Mbulelo Mandlana added that the party will not bar ANC members from seeking SACP leadership roles.

New provincial leaders are expected to be announced on Sunday.
