Lee Joo-young, a research professor at Seoul National University Human Rights Center, has been reelected to the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights for another four-year term starting in 2027, the foreign ministry announced Thursday. The CESCR, made up of 18 human rights experts, monitors countries' implementation of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.
South Korea's foreign ministry announced on Thursday that Lee Joo-young, a research professor at Seoul National University Human Rights Center, has been reelected as a member of the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR). She will serve another four-year term starting in 2027.
The CESCR consists of 18 human rights experts and monitors states' compliance with the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, which South Korea joined in 1990.
Lee was elected among nine members for the 2027-30 term, alongside an Indian expert representing the Asian region alongside her.
