Pittsburgh Steelers beat writer Ray Fittipaldo said the team is likely to move veteran quarterback Mason Rudolph to the practice squad early in the season. The Steelers currently have four quarterbacks on the roster but only three available spots.
Fittipaldo made the comments Friday on 93.7 The Fan. He said a practice squad move or injured reserve placement involving Rudolph is expected around early September.
The team’s other quarterbacks are starter Aaron Rodgers, third-round pick Drew Allar and Will Howard. Howard has taken most of the snaps during offseason practices and is viewed as having an edge due to his youth.
Rudolph has prior experience as a spot starter. However, the competition for the final roster spot leaves him at risk of being the odd man out unless Howard struggles in training camp and the preseason.
