Tourism Secretary warns visitors against abusing hospitality

Tourism Secretary Dita Angara-Mathay stated on June 29 that foreign tourists who disrespect locals or violate laws will face the full force of Philippine law. Her comments came after immigration authorities apprehended 10 foreigners in Siargao for alleged violations.

Angara-Mathay emphasized that the country's hospitality has limits. "I don't like our locals being mistreated," she said. "We're very welcoming and hospitable people. So we welcome you with open arms, a genuine smile in our face. We embrace you. We allow you into our community. But the minute you insult us, abuse our hospitality, that's where we draw the line."

She added that economic contributions do not exempt visitors from legal accountability. "If you break something, you break the law, you should feel the full force or the benefit," Angara-Mathay said. The remarks were not aimed at any specific nationality.

The Bureau of Immigration had detained the 10 foreign nationals, including Israelis, in Siargao on the same day. Angara-Mathay noted her comments were not racist and that enforcement applies equally to all.

The Inter-Ministerial Committee on Migration held a briefing on 14 June detailing enforcement actions following President Cyril Ramaphosa’s five-point plan on illegal immigration. Over 2,745 foreign nationals have been repatriated so far. The government warned against vigilantism as anti-migrant groups set a 30 June deadline for undocumented migrants to leave.
