President Donald Trump announced Thursday that a new U.S.-Saudi nuclear energy agreement will require Saudi Arabia to normalize relations with Israel through the Abraham Accords. The condition came one day after the deal was signed by U.S. and Saudi officials.
U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman signed the 30-year agreement on Wednesday. It would allow American companies to supply nuclear reactors and fuel for Saudi energy needs.
Trump posted on Truth Social the next day that the deal "will be approved, but is totally subject to Saudi Arabia joining the very respected and successful Abraham Accords." White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters the administration would continue talks with Saudi counterparts to finalize it.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed the condition in a statement. Saudi Arabia has long said it will not join the accords without progress toward a Palestinian state, which Israel opposes.
The agreement faces congressional review before taking effect.
