Women's businesses secure 58% of government tenders

Women's businesses have benefited from 58.3% of government tenders under the AGPO programme in the financial year ending June 2025. PPRA data shows contracts worth Sh33.1 billion out of a total Sh56.8 billion. Stakeholders say the share falls short of legal targets.

Data from the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA) and the National Treasury shows women's businesses received contracts worth Sh33.1 billion in the financial year ending June 2025. This represents 58.3% of Sh56.8 billion awarded under the government's AGPO tender programme.

Women Kenya organisation stated the figures should be higher, as women receive only 18.1% of AGPO opportunities. This is below the 30% reserved for women under the 2015 Public Procurement and Asset Disposal Act.

KIMS chairperson Jennifer Cirindi Njiru expressed regret that while women make up over half of the procurement sector workforce, fewer than 20% hold senior positions. Speaking at a Mombasa conference, she urged stakeholders to involve women in policy implementation.

The SHEconomy women's economic conference is scheduled for May 28-29 in Nairobi, expecting over 1,000 women entrepreneurs. Recolte founder Betty Karimi, the host, said: “We are in a time when economic issues are taking a new direction. We are the pillar of the economy and women will bring these changes.”
