The New York Yankees beat the Cleveland Guardians 2-1 on Thursday at Yankee Stadium despite missing Aaron Judge from the lineup.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. walked, stole second base, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on Ryan McMahon’s tiebreaking single in the seventh inning. That sequence proved decisive in the low-scoring contest. Carlos Rodón delivered six innings of one-run ball with seven strikeouts to earn the win. The Yankees added speed on the bases with steals by Paul Goldschmidt, Cody Bellinger and Chisholm. Max Schuemann filled in for Judge in right field and made two strong defensive plays. Judge sat out the series while undergoing testing on his right shoulder and rib cage. McMahon said after the game that the team must find ways to win without their three-time MVP. Manager Aaron Boone noted the club has other players capable of stepping up in Judge’s absence.
