La 79e édition du Festival de Cannes a débuté mardi soir par une cérémonie d’ouverture dans le Grand Théâtre Lumière. Peter Jackson a reçu une palme d’honneur pour son travail sur Le Seigneur des anneaux. Jane Fonda a lancé les festivités en tant que marraine.

Peter Jackson, 64 ans, a exprimé sa surprise en recevant la distinction des mains d’Elijah Wood, qui incarnait Frodon Sacquet. « C’est inattendu, presque miraculeux. La palme, jamais je n’aurais pensé en gagner une », a déclaré le réalisateur néo-zélandais. Il a rappelé ses visites passées à Cannes, notamment pour promouvoir Le Seigneur des anneaux il y a vingt-cinq ans.

La maîtresse de cérémonie Eye Haïdara a rendu hommage à la comédie et aux journalistes. La chanteuse Theodora a interprété Get Back des Beatles avec sobriété. Jane Fonda, 88 ans, a affirmé : « Je crois au pouvoir des voix à l’écran. Je crois que le cinéma est un acte de résistance. »

Le film d’ouverture, La Vénus électrique de Pierre Salvadori, a été projeté hors compétition. Les festivaliers suivront les projections jusqu’à la cérémonie de clôture le 23 mai.
